Updates

September 8th, 2009 by Chase No comments »

I have changed the theme of the blog as the other one was causing it to load extremely slow (though I’m not sure this will improve performance, it may be a hosting issue).  As a consequence, the photo gallery looks rather bad.  I will have to do some customizations before it will look proper.  End of the week. . .maybe. Update: We are getting rid of Gallery2 and using a new plugin for Wordpress for the photogallery.  We’ll see how fast we can rebuild the photo gallery.

Home Sweet Home!

August 1st, 2009 by Katie No comments »

Well we moved into our house July 14. We’re getting there unpacking. A few boxes of magazines that need to be put away (the bookcase will be here from Ikea via Mom O tomorrow). Some winter clothes to be packed into a storage bucket and out of their cardboard box. Then we’ll be finished unpacking. We decided to refinish the old furniture for the spare bedroom so we’ve sanded it all down, followed by primer. Some of the pieces have their final coats of paint done, the rest are in their first coats of primer. Hopefully, I’ll get the second coat primer and the first coat of paint on today. Then we still need to finish setting up the office. Nothing has been hung on the walls yet in our office. So we still need to hang shelves for my microbes, bulletin boards, diplomas, etc. In the meantime I finished fixing our curtains so they fit our windows better. Why waste the time trying to find fabric, cutting them straight, then sewing them if I can buy cheap ones for $15 and just slightly alter them?

Mom and Dad O are coming down tomorrow to help with the landscaping. I am so clueless about what to put where and what needs how much sun. All I know is those stupid bushes that are in front of the house are tiny now but will grow huge and they put them way too close to the house. Therefore, they will be moving to a side or the back. Flowers will replace them in the front. And eventually we’ll put a tree in the corner of the lot up closer to the stop sign. The wooded edge in the back will be cleaned up and given a nice line and left wooded. I’d rather not have to go through the work of cleaning it out. And sometime in the next month we’re planning on getting sod and an irrigation system put in.

On a side note, I had to renew my license this year so I waited until after the move to fill our the renewal application. The new ones are so much different than the old ones. The dates and signature are raised on both sides. There’s a picture on the front and then a picture in a clear window. Luckily since I just got my picture taken last year when I changed names they used that picture!

House news (Katie forgot the title)

June 28th, 2009 by Katie No comments »

Well, the contract we had on the house during my last post fell through. But everything happens for a reason. And the weekend it fell through we resumed our house search; we found a better (and cheaper) house that is new construction that we like better. We now have a contract on that house. Our appraisal is next week, if all goes well with it we should be in the clear as far as being able to get the house.

In the meantime, in preparation of our move out of our apartment we’ve starte packing and repainting the walls. Chantel’s old room is back to white primer instead of the blue that it has been for 3 years. Everything in our office has been disassembled and removed. It’s been taped up to prep for bringing it back to primer next weekend. So we’ll have to say good bye to the orange and maroon. After that all we have left to repaint is our bathroom. We still need to pack about half the apartment. It’s getting there, slowly but surely. The more we pack the more we get excited about the concept that we’re going to be homeowners in less than 2 weeks. My only question is when did I actually grow up? I don’t remember doing that.

Throwing rocks

June 12th, 2009 by Katie No comments »

Okay, so I don’t mean literally. I just mean to say when you throw rocks in a pond it creates huge changes in the surface of the water. Back to my analogy… Chase and I are experincing rocks being thrown in our pond. I got a job working as a lab specialist in a lab at MCV working in Spirochetes (a particular type of bacteria). It’s a lot of fun and I’m learning a lot. I’m in charge of making sure there’s buffers, broth, media, etc that everyone in the lab uses. On the side I get my own little piece of a project to work on. And any other time is spent helping other lab members if they need anything done.

Besides that Chase and I found a house that we really like. Our offer was accepted, we have had our home inspection. Now w’ere waiting on the appraisal and the underwriter. We’re hoping to close at the end of the month. It’s this really cute transitional house in our area (only about 10 miles from our apartment). We’ll get the pictures up soon so everyone can take a look.

Refraction

Refraction
Noun
Physics
1. the change in direction of a wave, such as light or sound, in passing from one medium to another in which it has a different velocity

After a few days of pondering life in general, I have gathered a good idea of what is going on and it relates to the word above.  I have never been good at metaphors, but I am at least going to try.
